There are a lot of talented people.....but because only a few have to have it.....only a few are great.
One of the things I enjoy most about teaching hitting....is watching how and why people fail....and comparing that to how and why people succeed.
There are many reasons, some real, some imagined.
But there is one thing common in all the greats....that takes them further than the rest....and that is their willingness to do what it takes....at all cost. Many talented people are not willing to pay the price. Many are willing to pay the price, to be the best they can be, but are not talented enough to reach the highest platform....therefore decide it's not worth it....and therefore don't pay the price.
To be the best you can be, you have to want it. You have to have it. Nothing will stand in your way. It has to consume you. You have to become slave to the goal.
You have to be willing to pay the price while KNOWING that there is no guarantee that you'll ever succeed. That statement right there eliminates 95% of all who ever play the game.
Sticking it out....seeing it through....when there seems to be no reason to continue....is the GUARANTEE of you becoming the best you can be.....because most won't do it. They fall by the wayside. Most will lose their dream at the first obstacle that they can't see past. When you can 'see the way' past an obstacle....it's easy to continue. But when you can't see how to get around it....the work seems harder....the mental effort is very taxing....and dreams are given up. Only those who persist....continue to fight....struggle....when there seems to be no reason to....other than hope....get blessed with 'better vision'. They are given a glimpse of life 'past the obstacle'....even though they are still a ways back. The 'glimpse' keeps them going....keeps them believing something good might happen. So they continue.
One nugget of knowledge leads you to the next nugget which leads you to the next, then the next, then the next....etc. But, from nugget one you couldn't even see nugget 10. #1 is big enough for some that they may not have been able to see nugget #3. But when #1 was down, and #2 was there....you could see the makings of #3.
There is no substitute for trust and belief.
When working with kids you really don't know what the talent factor is. Many haven't matured yet physically....let alone mentally. So, I'm open to all in that regard. I don't demand talent as a prerequisite to getting my time. But, I do have a way of learning who has what it takes in terms of drive, dedication and willingness to pay the price. That filter leads me to who to spend time with and who not to.
Most don't like it.
Thank you for revealing yourself before I spend time with you.
Your choice to fall by the wayside just guaranteed someone else's success.
