Jhonny Peralta just signs a 4 yr deal worth 52M. 13m/year. Last season he was caught using PEDs and was suspended 50 games.
Duh.
Is there anything more ridiculous than a 50 game suspension? Who does a 50 game suspension hurt? The player? The organization? The fans? Let's take a look.
Until they take the players MONEY from them.....the PED usage will continue.....and should continue. It's in the player's financial interest to CONTINUE.
Using Peralta's numbers as an example....a first time offender would miss 50 games....roughly 1/3 of a season. Which means they would take ~4.5M from him. He signed for 52M. That leaves a balance of 47.5M
He gets 47.5M.....and a nice vacation.
HOW STUPID ARE THEY?
If you are a minor leaguer....who has spent your entire life dedicated to baseball....with the goal of becoming a MLB player....YOU ARE A FOOL NOT TO TAKE PEDs. If you are a AAAA player....meaning you bounce back and forth between AAA and the big leagues.....YOU ARE A FOOL NOT TO TAKE PEDs. If you are a star.....the system says do it.....DO IT......DO IT. Hundreds of millions is on the line. Think of what that means to you and your family.
If you can get ONE good contract....you win....no matter the suspension. But wait....based on those numbers that got you the first contract....that were tainted....you are HIGHLY LIKELY to get a second....and maybe a third.
Here are the REAL rules:
First....in order to compete you most likely need to....the competition is doing it.
Second.....the financial system dictates that you take them.
Yes....there are health issues. But they are rather spotty. What young person says no to the chance of making millions? "It won't happen to me". If it does....I will have lived a good life.
The smart money says do it. Set your family for life....and in many cases....your family's family....and your family's family's family.
Before you whine about my opinion....I do not favor PEDs. I favor a REAL punishment....that will MOST CERTAINLY reduce PED usage to next to nothing.
Take ALL of their money. VOID THEIR CONTRACT.

The MLB testing program is really more of an IQ test. They just had Biogenesis drop in their lap...
What if the guys ahead of you are training just as hard for just as long AND taking something to boost their performance? Training harder/longer/better doesn't gain you any ground because the guys on dope are doing the same thing. It comes to a decision about moral commitment vs. greed and/or ego. Can you bust your ass for all those years and NOT give yourself the opportunity to see just how good you can be? Now, throw in assurances from the doctors that you won't get caught...
